EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Emergency preparedness allows you to prepare for the un-expected, such as assembling a supply kit and developing a family communications plan for any kind of emergency. With a little planning, you can be better prepared for the unexpected.

Family Disaster Plan/ Supply Kit Guide

Before any disaster formulate a plan. Decide where you will go if you must leave. Put together a supply kit, emergency contact list, and an important document container.

FLOODS

BEFORE THE FLOOD

  • Unplug all electrical devices and turn off utilities from main switch.
  • If feasible, construct barriers such as sandbags to stop floodwater from entering.

DURING THE FLOOD

  • Evacuate if you have time, or seek the highest ground available in your location.
  • Do not walk through moving water.
  • If you are in your vehicle, do not drive through flood waters. Abandon vehicle and move to higher ground.

AFTER A FLOOD

  • Do not drink tap water until safe.
  • Avoid flood waters. They may be contaminated or electrically charged
  • Clean and disinfect everything that got wet.
TORNADOS

BEFORE THE TORNADO

  • Determine in advance where you will take shelter in the event of a tornado warning.

DURING THE TORNADO

  • Stay in your shelter, or a center interior room in the lowest level of the building.
  • Stay away from doors and windows.
  • If you are in a car, get out immediately and go to a place for shelter or lie flat in a nearby ditch and cover your head with your hands.
  • Never try to out run a tornado in congested or urban areas in your car.
  • Watch out for flying debris. It causes the most fatalities in a tornado.

AFTER A TORNADO

  • Leave damaged buildings and steer clear of downed power lines.

Disaster Supply Kit

  • Food, at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • Bottled beverages
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio with extra batteries
  • 2 weeks supply of medication
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Wrench or pliers
  • Non-electric can-opener
  • Local map for evacuating or finding shelters
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket per person
  • Rain gear, extra clothing, and sturdy shoes
  • Toilet paper, towelettes, soap, liquid detergent, feminine supplies, personal hygiene items
  • Plastic garbage bags and newspaper for pets
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Waterproof matches
  • Paper plates, cups and utensils
  • Insect repellent
  • Battery-powered fans
  • Baby formula, diapers, and food
  • Dentures and supplies
  • Contact lenses and supplies
  • Extra eyeglasses
  • Documents: Driver license, social security card, immunization record(s), proof of address, birth/marriage/death certificates, bank and credit card numbers, insurance policies, stocks and bonds, veterinarian records
