Preparing for an Emergency

Emergency preparedness allows you to prepare for the unexpected, such as flooding or tornadoes. Assemble a supply kit and develop a family communications plan for any kind of emergency. With a little planning, you can be better prepared for the unexpected.

Disaster Supply Kit

Essentials
  • baby formula, diapers and food
  • bottled water (one gallon per person per day for three days)
  • nonperishable food (at least a three-day supply)
  • two weeks' supply of medication
Tools & Supplies
  • battery-powered fans
  • battery-powered or hand-crank radio with extra batteries
  • fire extinguisher
  • first aid kit
  • flashlight with extra batteries
  • insect repellent
  • local map for evacuating or finding shelters
  • non-electric can opener
  • paper plates, cups, and utensils
  • waterproof matches
  • whistle to signal for help
  • wrench or pliers
  • garbage bags
Important Documents
Store these in a waterproof container:
  • bank and credit card account numbers
  • birth, marriage, or death certificates
  • driver's license or state ID
  • immunization records
  • insurance policies (health, home, auto, etc.)
  • proof of address (such as a utility bill or lease)
  • social security card
  • stocks, bonds, and other financial records
Personal Items
  • extra eyeglasses or contact lenses and supplies
  • sleeping bag or warm blanket per person
  • rain gear, extra clothing, and sturdy shoes

    • feminine hygiene products
    • liquid detergent
