Published on September 08, 2025

National Food Safety Education Month is an opportunity to empower individuals and communities to take an active role in preventing foodborne illness, also known as “food poisoning.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that an estimated 1 in 6 Americans get sick from foodborne diseases.

As you prepare your meals at home, here are some important food safety tips to help protect you and your loved ones from food poisoning.

  • Clean: This includes washing hands and surfaces often.
  • Separate: Keep raw and cooked foods separate to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Cook: Prepare foods to the correct internal temperatures using a thermometer.
  • Chill: Refrigerating promptly and keeps items chilled.

Food safety awareness extends to using safe water, washing produce, and knowing when to discard food. Food safety is a key role of public health because it keeps people from getting sick and helps communities stay healthy.
