February is National Children's Dental Health Month, a time to highlight programs that support children's overall health and well-being. Metro Health's Oral Health Program is helping improve children's oral health across San Antonio by bringing preventive dental care directly to where children learn and grow.

Using a public health approach, the program focuses on serving children from underserved, uninsured, and underinsured families. Through Early Head Start and Head Start programs, participating elementary schools, and the Miles of Smiles initiative, Metro Health provides oral evaluations and preventive services such as fluoride varnish and dental sealants to help prevent tooth decay and avoid more complex dental treatment later.

Metro Health also works closely with parents and caregivers to connect children who need follow-up dental care with community providers. These early interventions help children eat, speak, and learn without pain while supporting school readiness and academic success.

The Oral Health Program additionally connects eligible families to Title V financial dental assistance for children who do not qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. By promoting preventive care and reducing health inequities, Metro Health's Oral Health Program is helping build healthier children, stronger families, and a healthier San Antonio.
