During Fiesta season, the City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) reminds you to celebrate Fiesta safely by protecting yourself and your loved ones. This includes taking actions to prevent illnesses while you and your loved ones are celebrating.

Beat the Heat

Stay safe during Fiesta by

  • preparing for potential hot weather
  • staying hydrated (avoid alcoholic drinks or caffeine)
  • wearing light clothing
  • protecting yourself from the sun

If you plan to attend any Fiesta events, be prepared by checking the daily forecast.

Check on high-risk individuals and recognize signs of heat-related illnesses like a heat stroke. Never leave children or pets in hot vehicles and seek immediate help if you see someone who feels ill due to the heat.

Food Safety

Celebrating Fiesta safely is also about preventing food poisoning and ensuring meals are safe to eat, whether you are out at an event or hosting your own at your home.

Metro Health's Food and Environmental program offers tips on how to make sure food is safe to consume. Food inspectors are also present during Fiesta events to ensure that booths are up to code and meals are safe to consume.

Infectious Disease Prevention

It’s important to prioritize preventing the spread of infectious diseases to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

  • Practice good hygiene by washing your hands frequently with soap and water or using hand sanitizer.
  • To maximize protection from respiratory illnesses, Metro Health encourages individuals to
    • stay home if they feel ill
    • keep up to date with routine vaccinations
    • cover coughs and sneezes

Vector Control

Mosquito season is around the corner, posing a health risk due to diseases like West Nile virus. We can protect ourselves from mosquito bites by

  • wearing long sleeves
  • using insect repellent
  • removing standing water at home and other areas.
