Diabetes Education for Adults

The City of San Antonio Metro Health started the Diabetes Prevention & Control program in 2013. Our mission is to educate the community about the long term negative effects of chronic disease like diabetes. Trained educators will coach and model ways to take control of your physical activity and nutrition based on best practices to prevent the development of diabetes and other chronic diseases. Community workshop series are offered to participants. Our goal is to see San Antonians live longer, healthier lives!

Programs

Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Program

For those diagnose with pre-diabetes, this Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) provides a supportive environment through 16 weekly workshops. Participants work together in small groups to learn about healthy eating and ways to increase their physical activity to reduce the risk of developing diabetes due to poor nutrition or sedentary lifestyle. After the 16 weekly workshops and over the next eight months, participants receive follow-up and monitoring of health goals with an additional six bi-weekly meetings and then three monthly meetings to measure long-term and sustainable success!

Diabetes Education & Empowerment Program (DEEP)

DEEP is an eight-week multi-cultural, diabetes self-management education curriculum that successfully helps many community participants take control of their diabetes and reduce their risk of complications. Adult men and women who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are eligible to participate in this program.

Diabetes Garage: Self-Management for Men

The Diabetes Garage is a four-week diabetes self-management workshop series specifically designed for men who have diabetes. The curriculum uses examples of car maintenance and automotive care to describe how men with diabetes should take care of their bodies. Topics include healthy eating, taking medication, checking your blood sugar level and increasing your physical activity.

Healthy Living Workshop Series

This program is a seven-week workshop series designed to help you eat better, live healthier and live longer. Through better nutrition and increased physical activity, you can prevent or delay many chronic diseases. Also, those who have chronic diseases can better manage their symptoms through applying what they learn in these helpful sessions.

Diabetes Workshops

Workshops are held at locations around the San Antonio area in a classroom setting and are designed to maximize peer support. We welcome family members, friends, and caregivers to accompany you as well.

Education materials are provided at no cost, and a variety of take-home items and tools are given to participants who complete the workshop series.
