WIC Peer Counselor Awareness

Published on September 10, 2025

A woman sits in a chair, breastfeeding her baby, creating a nurturing and intimate moment between them.

Metro Health is dedicated to raising awareness about important maternal, infant, child, and adolescent health topics. This is a key role of public health.

An impactful service offered through the WIC Program is the Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. WIC Peer Counselors are mothers from the community who have breastfed their own children and received specialized training to guide, support, and encourage other moms on their breastfeeding journey.

Because they often share the same language, culture, and life experiences, peer counselors can provide personalized, accessible support that helps reduce health disparities and strengthens family well-being.

Why Peer Counselors Matter

Peer Counselors are Trusted Public Health Partners
WIC Peer Counselors are trained community members who have breastfed and understand the challenges and rewards of nursing. They provide personalized, nonjudgmental support grounded in lived experience.
Breastfeeding is a Public Health Priority
Breastfeeding improves health outcomes for both mothers and babies. WIC Peer Counselors help reduce health disparities by supporting women, especially those working or in school, to achieve their breastfeeding goals.
No cost support
Peer Counselors are part of your community and available through WIC to help you navigate feeding challenges, celebrate successes, and give your baby the best start in life, wherever you are in your journey.

Metro Health encourages families to connect with a WIC Peer Counselor and experience the difference that community-based support can make.
