Accessory Dwelling Unit Program

Small housing units The Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Program is part of our city's Strategic Housing Implementation Plan (SHIP). SHIP is a plan to build and preserve more than 28,000 affordable homes throughout the next 10 years.

Our goal is to increase the number of ADUs in neighborhoods. The program will include permit-ready plans, incentives and more resources. This program will fully launch late August 2024.

About ADUs

An ADU is a small house on the same lot as a larger, main house. It includes at least a bathroom, kitchen, and living space.

ADUs can be created in two ways:

  • Attached: Connected to the main house, like an add-on or garage apartment.
  • Detached: As a separate building from the main house.

ADUs are sometimes called by the following names:

  • a casita
  • in-law suite
  • alley home
  • garage apartment

Request For Qualifications (RFQ)

The City of San Antonio is accepting proposals for permit-ready plan designs for ADUs. The City intends to select 15 plans. Selected plan designs will be awarded and featured online in an ADU Permit-Ready Library in August 2024.
