The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) employs more than 2,500 sworn law enforcement officers and more than 500 civilians.
SAPD Training Academy
The San Antonio Training Academy provides courses for cadets and existing officers. Cadet training involves 35 weeks of rigorous academic, physical and tactical training. The Academy averages 3 classes a year, with 60 cadets in each class. The SAPD Training Academy is equipped with:
- Driving track
- Firearms bay
- Armory
- Rifle range
- Tactical village
- Academic building
Cadets complete over 1,400 hours of training in the following core classes:
- Arrest and seizure
- Penal code
- Traffic code
- Communications
- Criminal investigations
The SAPD Training Academy conducts annual training for SAPD officers.
This ensures they complete all TCOLE mandated courses and certifications. Some of the classes taught include:
- Cultural diversity
- De-escalation tactics
- Crisis intervention
- Legislative updates
- Firearms qualifications
- Officer wellness
- Leadership school (LPO)

Citizen Police Academy
The SAPD Training Academy also hosts the Citizen Police Academy. This 12-week course educates residents about the SAPD and police work in San Antonio. It includes a ride-along for a behind-the-scenes look at the daily activities of the SAPD.
