Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSMO)

Traffic Efficiency Tools

This team helps move pedestrian, bicycle and transit vehicle traffic move more efficiently and safely on our existing roadways by maximizing the use of various tools.

Existing Traffic Signals & Other Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Devices

These devices communicate with the Transportation & Infrastructure Management Center (TIMC) located in the TransGuide Traffic Management facility.

Vehicle Detection Equipment & Traffic Cameras

Used to determine when roadways are flowing inefficiently.

Central Computer System

Can be used by traffic signal engineers to make real-time adjustments to signal timing to improve traffic flow.

Traffic Signal Coordination

All 1,400 traffic signals are evaluated every five years to determine if timing adjustments are needed to help more vehicles through a group of signals with minimal stops.

While this may result in some delays on side streets, the overall system performance improves overall traffic flow.

Traffic Signal Synchronization & Modernization (TSSM) Program

In 2008, the City started the 5-year TSSM Program.  Its goals included:

  • Maximize the flow of traffic.
  • Reduce traffic delays.
  • Reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
  • Reducing the number of crashes.

Program Results

  • 32% fewer vehicular stops
  • 12% average reduction in travel time
