Block Party Permits

Requests for temporary street closures associated with block parties, festivals, etc. throughout San Antonio must be submitted to the Right of Way (ROW) Management Division:

  • at least 30 calendar days prior to the date for which the closure is needed.
  • by submitting an application through the City's permit system.

This process ensures that the community follows the correct street barricading procedures for the safety of pedestrians and vehicular traffic. It also informs the following for planning purposes:

  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Fire Department
  • Police Department
  • VIA Metropolitan Transit

Application Process

Step 1.Gather Required Information

  • A person's name, address, and telephone number as a contact for future information.
  • Purpose of temporary street closure.
  • Name of street to be closed plus the names of intersecting streets.
  • The City Council District in which the street closure is scheduled to occur.
  • Dates and times of beginning and ending of closure.
    • Applicants should ensure they have adequate time for set-up and removal of any traffic obstructions within the closure.
  • Determine if any other permits will be required for specified activity within the City's right of way (for example, vending permits).
  • Acknowledgement(PDF, 154KB) in writing from all residents and businesses whose property or driveways front the street being closed, regardless of whether or not they are participating in the event.
  • Name of the barricade company that will provide and set up barricades for the event.
  • The City may require a detailed site plan or traffic control plan.

Step 2.Submit Your Request

Submit your request to the ROW Management Division at least 30 days before the event using the City's permit system:

Submit a Permit Request

For step-by-step instructions, see the Block Party Permit Instructions(PDF, 553KB).

City Review

  • ROW staff will review your request and coordinate with the San Antonio Fire and Police Departments to evaluate safety, traffic impact, and feasibility.
  • Upon receipt of approvals from the Fire and Police Departments and confirmation of feasibility, ROW staff will recommend the permit for approval to the Office of the City Manager.

NOTE: Streets that are not primarily residential in character will not normally be considered for this type of closure.

Step 3.Pay the Permit Fee

Once the City Manager's office approves the request, ROW staff will contact you for payment.

Fee: $100 per block, per calendar day.

This fee for temporary street closures was established by Ordinance 2009-09-17-0731L (PDF).
