Career

Jonathan Gary was recently appointed Director of Animal Care Services (ACS) for the City of San Antonio after a 25-year career heading up a successful municipal animal shelter in Oklahoma City. He has worked in the medical side of animal sheltering, supervised field services, and overseen daily shelter operations including placement and customer relations.

In his previous roles, he has earned the respect of the local rescue community by developing strategic plans to increase the placement of pets for life. He has been recognized for his work in animal welfare through a formal collaboration with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) as a community partner.

Jon's current responsibilities include overseeing key areas of animal welfare in San Antonio including:

  • Protecting public safety and the enforcement of the Chapter 5 ordinance
  • Supporting humane care and placement for the life of a pet
  • Growing lifesaving options for pets in need as well as partnerships to support those goals
  • Fostering positive connections to support collaborative animal welfare solutions
