Head Start

A Mother's Journey to Success

Leona Hernandez says Head Start has had a life-changing impact. She was a single mother who moved to San Antonio and commuted to Austin for work with her daughter. Hernandez said she felt physically and emotionally exhausted and knew she needed to make a change.

"Head Start gave me the opportunity to return to UTSA to finish my bachelor's degree by providing reliable, quality child care when I thought continuing my education wouldn't be possible," Hernandez said.

"Not only has it allowed me to pursue my dreams, but my daughter is thriving in a nurturing, child-centered environment that prioritizes families and truly puts children first.

"My Head Start family will always hold a special place in my heart."
