Visiting Rules

  • All coats and outerwear must be left in the assigned area.
  • All briefcases, book bags, handbags, books, newspapers and other personal belongings must be left in the assigned area.
  • Laptops, digital cameras and recording devices are permitted in the research and archives area. You must ensure that use does not disturb others and that such use does not damage records. Outlets for electronic devices are available.
  • To avoid distracting others, phones must be turned off or placed on vibrate mode.
  • Personal papers are not permitted in the records and archives area. For security reasons, papers may be reviewed by staff prior to leaving the facility.
  • Eating or drinking is not permitted in the records and archives area.

Policy for Researching Records

  • Protect the records; only pencils are permitted to be used for taking notes.
  • Do not lean on the records or rest other books or objects on the surface of the records.
  • Gloves are required and will be provided by MARC staff.
  • Handle any photographic image by the edges.
  • Do not make notes in the margin of the records or attempt to correct any misspelling.
  • Do not make marks on the records.
  • Tracing of records is not permitted.
  • Records may only be viewed in the records and archives area. They may not be removed to any other part of the building.
  • Only one box or book may be reviewed at a time. Remove only one folder at a time. Use the out-cards provided by MARC staff to mark record location in the box. Return folders in the same order and facing the same direction as retrieved.
  • Anyone found stealing, defacing, mutilating or damaging records will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. These activities will be grounds for permanent removal from the MARC.
  • Follow the copyright rules.

Copyright Information

Some materials in the MARC may be subject to third-party rights, such as copyright or rights of privacy/publicity, or copyright by the City of San Antonio.

Such copyrighted materials may not be distributed, displayed, published, or otherwise reproduced without the permission of the copyright holder.

You are fully responsible for determining copyright status, locating copyright holders, and abiding by current copyright law.

First-Time Visitors

Step 1.Fill out the Registration Form

On your first visit, you will need to complete a registration form. The form will need to be filled out before you arrive with printed copy provided to Municipal Archives & Records Center (MARC) staff or filled out at the facility.

Step 2.Accepted Forms of Identification

Provide acceptable form of photo ID such as a:

  • Driver’s License
  • Military Identification
  • Passport
  • State ID 

Staff will use this information confirm your information.
