Funeral Home Requests

Funeral homes are responsible for the ordering of death certificates and Burial Transit Permits for their clients.

Death Certificates

NOTE: All death certificate orders are processed the same day during regular business hours.

Step 2.Submit a Request

You may submit a request for death certificates to the Vital Records Office in one of the ways listed below.

In Person

A request can be submitted by an approved representative of the funeral home with a photo ID to the Vital Records Office.

Step 3.Pick Up

You can pick up up and pay for certificates at the dedicated Funeral Home window in the Vital Records Office.

Only approved representatives of the funeral home with a photo ID may pick up the certificates at the Vital Records Office.

Visitor Security Information

All visitors must pass through a metal detector upon entry. Please allow 15 additional minutes for screening before your scheduled visit.

To help the process go smoothly:

  • Bring small bags only (no large bags or backpacks).
  • Limit your group to 2 - 3 people.
  • Remove any prohibited items before arrival, including metal nail files, pocketknives, firearms, box cutters, scissors, razor blades, pepper spray, stun guns, tasers, or any item designed or modified to function as a weapon. 

Your cooperation helps maintain a safe and secure environment for all visitors and staff.

Burial Transit Permits (BTP)

All BTPs must be signed by the local registrar. Funeral homes can either print a BTP themselves if it qualifies or make a request to the Vital Records Office to have the BTP created.

Step 1.Print BTP at the Funeral Home

Funeral Homes can print their own BTP if it fulfills the following requirements:

  • Record is fully electronic.
  • Cause of death is marked as natural manner of death.
  • Record has been demographically verified in TxEVER.

NOTE: BTP's signed by the local registrar can be purchased at the Vital Records Office for $25.

Step 2.Submit a Request

You may submit a request for a BTP to the Vital Records Office in one of the ways listed below.

GoCertificates in partnership with the City Clerk accepts online orders for birth, death and burial transit permits.

Note: Funeral home and crematories can pay for a BTP online using a credit card. A $7 processing fee applies. Choose pickup or mail delivery (additional shipping fees apply)

Step 3.Processing Time

All requests must be received between 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. for the completed permit to be faxed to the requestor by 3 p.m.

Any requests submitted after 2 p.m. will be completed and faxed to the requester the following day by 10 a.m.

Step 4.Pick Up

Funeral homes will be required to pick up their original BTPs once a month.
