Joint Military Task Force (JMTF)

The Joint Military Task Force (JMTF) is the San Antonio region's senior military-community forum focused on strengthening, protecting, and growing the military missions and defense ecosystem across San Antonio and Bexar County.

The JMTF brings together senior leaders from Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), the National Guard, the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, and other key community and defense partners to identify military requirements, address challenges, pursue opportunities, and coordinate regional support for current and future missions.

As the home of Joint Base San Antonio and a nationally significant defense community, the region works through the JMTF to:

  • Protect and enhance existing military missions and installations.
  • Advocate for new and expanding Department of War missions.
  • Improve military readiness and mission resilience.
  • Address infrastructure, transportation, energy, land-use, workforce, and quality-of-life requirements affecting military operations.
  • Protect military installations and training areas from incompatible development and urban encroachment.
  • Strengthen collaboration among military, government, industry, education, and community partners.
  • Reinforce San Antonio and Bexar County's position as one of the Nation's premier military and defense communities.

Focus Areas

Mission Protection, Growth & Readiness

  • Monitor Department of War force structure, basing, realignment, and mission decisions that could affect the San Antonio region.
  • Assess vulnerabilities and opportunities associated with JBSA installations and missions.
  • Identify opportunities to attract, retain, and expand military and defense missions in the region.
  • Evaluate the region's capacity to accommodate new or expanded missions at JBSA and other defense-supporting locations.
  • Identify military mission competitors and strengthen San Antonio's competitive position for future missions.
  • Coordinate community support for military infrastructure, facilities, transportation, energy, communications, and other readiness requirements.
  • Analyze and communicate cost savings, efficiencies, and mission benefits resulting from community investments and partnerships.
  • Support compatible land-use and encroachment mitigation efforts surrounding military installations, training areas, and operational airspace.
  • Monitor and support implementation of regional military compatibility and land-use recommendations.
  • Assess potential impacts associated with military mission reductions, relocations, or force structure changes and develop strategies to mitigate those impacts.

Defense Ecosystem Development

  • Strengthen coordination among military installations, government, industry, academia, research institutions, and economic development organizations.
  • Support growth in strategic defense sectors including military medicine, cybersecurity, space, intelligence, advanced technology, and other emerging national security missions.
  • Identify infrastructure and workforce investments that improve San Antonio's competitiveness for future Department of War missions.
  • Promote opportunities for public-public and public-private partnerships that improve military readiness while creating efficiencies for the Department of War and the community.
  • Support efforts to retain transitioning service members, military spouses, veterans, and defense-sector talent within the San Antonio region.

Community Relations & Advocacy

  • Communicate the importance of JBSA, the National Guard, and the region's military missions to national defense and homeland security.
  • Educate key stakeholders and the public about the military and defense sector's economic impact on San Antonio, Bexar County, and the State of Texas.
  • Highlight community investments and partnerships that directly support military readiness, mission resilience, and quality of life.
  • Coordinate regional advocacy for priority military missions, infrastructure projects, and defense investments.
  • Maintain and communicate current information regarding the regional military and defense economic impact.
  • Highlight the contributions of service members, military families, veterans, civilian employees, and defense partners throughout the San Antonio region.
  • Demonstrate San Antonio and Bexar County's continued commitment to supporting the military community and preserving the region's legacy as Military City USA®.
