Overview

Mexico City is the capital and largest city of Mexico, a major global hub for culture, finance and industry. It is North America's most populous city and is located in the Valley of Mexico, next to active volcano Popocatépetl. The city is known for its rich history, diverse culture and sprawling metropolis, encompassing Aztec ruins and modern skyscrapers.

Mexico City is the largest metropolitan area of the Western Hemisphere and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world. Mexico City is also both the oldest capital city in the Americas and one of only two founded by indigenous peoples.

Formerly known as Distrito Federal (Federal District) or simply DF by many, Mexico City is the seat of the federal government that houses the offices and headquarters for executive, legislative and judicial branches of the Mexican government. Mexico City has 16 administrative divisions that have regulatory powers but are not fully autonomous in their internal administration. In 1987, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed both Mexico City's Historic Center and the network of canals known as Xochimilco as World Heritage Sites for Outstanding Universal Value.
