SA Climate Ready

In 2017, City Council set a goal to become carbon neutral by 2050 and adapt to current and future climate impact. On June 22, 2017, City Council passed Resolution No. 2017-06-22-0031R (PDF) in support of the Paris Climate Agreement; directing city staff to develop a plan to help San Antonio meet the objectives of this agreement.

In 2019 City Council approved SA Climate Ready, which is San Antonio's Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP). The plan addresses the present and future challenges of climate change with the goal to achieve carbon neutrality. It provides strategies for ensuring economic prosperity and quality of life. It prioritizes clean air, public health, water quality and conservation, good jobs, transportation choices, clean and secure energy and emergency preparedness.

On October 17, 2019, City Council adopted the CAAP by Ordinance 2019-10-17-0840  (PDF).

Advisory Committee

The 17-member SA Climate Ready Advisory Committee guides City staff and Council on the SA Climate Ready Plan. Their diverse expertise shapes actions to reduce emissions, boost climate resilience, and build a sustainable San Antonio. Members are selected based on their technical climate expertise, diverse perspectives, and a collaborative mindset to drive results.

Subcommittees

The SA Climate Ready Advisory Committee is working with three subcommittees to prioritize actions and define the path towards meeting our mitigation and adaptation goals. Committees:

Natural Systems, Biodiversity and Climate Readiness

Healthy ecosystems absorb emissions. This group will focus on solutions that protect natural ecosystems and support climate adaptation. Examples: tree canopy expansion, green infrastructure and water conservation.

Energy and Buildings

Almost half of San Antonio’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the energy supply that powers buildings. This group will focus on solutions that lower generation emissions and building energy use. Examples: efficient buildings, appliance upgrades and streetlighting improvements.

Transportation and Mobility

Transportation systems cause over one-third of San Antonio’s GHG emissions. This group will focus on solutions to reduce emissions from the transportation sector. Examples: expanded transit options, electric buses and shared mobility options.
