The City of San Antonio is launching a comprehensive planning process to improve connectivity across Interstate 37. The interstate is a major barrier for people walking, rolling or cycling between the East Side and Downtown, and community feedback will inform near-term and long-term solutions. The planning process will result in a strategic plan and preliminary design package for priority projects.
Objectives
- Holistic Connectivity: Improve neighborhood access to key destinations and improve mobility across I-37.
- Equitable Access: Expand safe, walkable, and affordable transportation options for all ages and abilities.
- Beyond Infrastructure: Support equitable economic growth while preserving neighborhood character and housing affordability.
Study Area

The core study area focuses on east-west connections along I-37 between Houston Street and Carolina Street. To better understand how surrounding neighborhoods connect to I 37 crossings and transit services, the study also considers an expanded area reaching Pine Street to the east and St. Mary’s Street to the west.
Timeline & Engagement Opportunities
Community engagement will take place throughout the planning process, with three public meetings and community surveys held during each project phase:
- Spring 2026: Community Vision and Needs Assessment
- Summer 2026: Solutions and Concept Alternatives
- Fall 2026: Preferred Concepts
