Park History

Al Rohde Park officially opened on December 12, 2009. This .8980-acre park includes a playscape and benches, generously donated to the City of San Antonio by local real estate developer and former City Council member Alfred William "Al" Rohde Jr. in 2008..

Mr. Rohde, who passed away on May 25, 2010, was deeply rooted in San Antonio's real estate scene, beginning his career in 1958 after retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps. During his military service, he worked as a combat photographer and documentary filmmaker, contributing to newsreels for Time Inc. Additionally, he played Uncle Sam in promotional clips for war bonds produced by MGM Studios. Elected to the City Council in 1975, he served until 1977 and, for several years, he dressed as Uncle Sam for Fourth of July celebrations.
