Park History

In 1964, the City bought 202 acres of land, initially known as Bandera Road Park but later renamed O.P. Schnabel Park in 1977. The park is famous for its oak trees, mountain laurels, and native plants.

O.P. Schnabel was well-known for working to "keep San Antonio clean and beautiful." He led cleanup and beautification efforts, using catchy phrases like "nice people don't litter" and "be a beauty bug, not a litter bug." Some mistakenly thought "O.P." meant Old Push Broom, but it's actually Schnabel's initials.

The Beautify San Antonio Association, named after Sadie Ray and Waldo Graff, along with Schnabel, dedicated their lives to the organization. O.P. Schnabel Park is often called "the cleanest little park in Texas."
