SAN ANTONIO (September 11, 2025) – Today, during a scheduled San Antonio City Council vote, District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo abstained from supporting a resolution to censure District 8 Councilmember Ivalis Meza Gonzalez.
“It is the duty of the District 8 residents and the public to hold their elected officials accountable,” Castillo stated. “Per the City Charter, there are several mechanisms in place regarding forfeiture of office for those convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.”
“Every individual is entitled to due process. Any determination of wrongdoing should follow the process and ultimately be judged by the people they serve. This is not an attempt to defend drunk driving, nor does it condone this behavior. Rather it is confidence that the justice system will hold Councilmember Meza Gonzalez accountable.”
The abstention reflects Councilmember Castillo’s position on the broader principle of peer censure among elected officials, suggesting such actions should rest with voters rather than fellow councilmembers.
