SAN ANTONIO (June 18, 2026) – During today's A Session, City Council voted to delay a decision on a proposed San Antonio Water System (SAWS) rate increase until October 2026. The four-year proposal would have raised the average residential water and wastewater bill from $56.68 to $60.59 this summer, with rates climbing past $70 per month by 2029.
Councilmember Whyte voiced opposition to the rate hike, citing the need for a clearer picture of what's driving the proposed increase before the Council moves forward. "Residents deserve a more detailed explanation of why SAWS needs this increase," the District 10 Councilmember said.
Whyte also raised questions about whether SAWS is efficiently managing existing revenue before asking ratepayers for more. "We owe it to ratepayers to make sure SAWS is operating efficiently before we ask them to pay more," he said. "Affordability has to come first, and SAWS must do more to convince Council that it is protecting our residents."
