SAN ANTONIO (November 24, 2025) – As peak mailing and shipping season approaches, the City of San Antonio is launching a citywide public awareness campaign to directly address the increasing number of cluster mailbox thefts impacting residents and communities.

The campaign aims to inform and empower residents on the risks of mail and identity theft, share actionable prevention strategies, encourage timely reporting to both federal and local authorities, and ultimately, strengthen collaboration between the community and law enforcement to deter these crimes. Residents can access all campaign resources at SA.gov/MailboxTheft.

Mailbox Theft Prevention Tips

  • Retrieve mail daily.
  • Sign up for the free U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Informed Delivery service which gives previews of mail and packages scheduled to arrive soon.
  • Sign up for paperless statements and billing.
  • Report suspicious activity or mailbox tampering to the San Antonio Police Department’s (SAPD) non-emergency line at 210-207-7273.
  • Avoid sharing a key.
  • When going out of town, request that USPS hold mail.
  • Use a secure alternative for valued items.

How to Report Mail Theft

The campaign is a direct outcome of the collaborative effort initiated by a Council Consideration Request (CCR) filed by District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito in October 2024.

"I recognize that mail delivery is technically a federal responsibility. But these are our residents, and they’re looking to us for help," said District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito. "That’s why we wanted to explore what local steps we could take to help prevent theft and improve safety."

SAPD Chief McManus said, “Protecting your mail is a way to protect your personal information. Reporting mail theft can protect you and your neighbors.”
