Councilmember Calls for Action to Address Cluster Mailbox Theft
Published on October 23, 2024
SAN ANTONIO (October 23, 2024) –District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito submitted a policy proposal today to address the increasing number of cluster mailbox thefts impacting communities. Cluster mailboxes have become increasingly vulnerable to theft, leading to lost mail, compromised personal information, and heightened anxiety among community members.
“While mail delivery is a federal responsibility, these are our residents, and we want to take local action wherever possible,” the Councilmember said. “I believe that everyone deserves to feel secure about their mail delivery. Our proposal is a proactive step toward reducing cluster mailbox theft.”
The policy proposal calls for the City of San Antonio to explore creating a program that would utilize CPS Energy’s All Night Security Lighting program to assist homeowners associations (HOAs) with an extra layer of deterrent from crime. Additionally, the proposal creates a task force from multiple agencies to come together, address the issue, and find solutions.
“By collaborating with communities, law enforcement, and local leaders, we seek to tackle and reduce mail theft,” the Councilmember added. “It’s essential to call attention to this issue and partner with law enforcement to hold accountable those criminals who disrupt our neighbors’ peace of mind and steal their belongings.”
This policy proposal has the supporting signatures from Councilmembers Melissa Cabello Havdra (District 6), Manny Pelaez (District 8), John Courage (District 9) and Marc Whyte (District 10).
