Voting Open for People’s Choice Nominees in Accessory Dwelling Unit Design Competition

SAN ANTONIO (November 7, 2023) – Grand prize winners have been selected for the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Design Competition, and now it’s the public’s turn to vote for their favorite of five entries competing for two $250 People’s Choice Awards.

Votes for the entries will be accepted through noon on Friday, Nov. 10, on SA Speak Up. The selected designs were entries submitted through the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADUs) Design Competition held in the summer by the City of San Antonio, Able City, and its nonprofit affiliate City Makery. The grant wassupported through an AARP Community Challenge Grant.

The San Antonio community was asked to design and imagine an ADU – commonly referred to as a guest home, casita, cuartito, in-law suite, carriage home, or garage apartment. Increasing the number of Accessory Dwelling Units through the City is a strategy within the City’s Strategic Housing Implementation Plan.

Jurors with disABILITYsa, the National Organization of Minority Architects of Central Texas (NOMA), the San Antonio Housing Trust and Successful Aging and Living in San Antonio (SALSA) selected the winners for the Most Innovative Design, Most Cohesive Story, Most Accessible Design, Best K-12 Student Entry, Best Design Professional Entry and Best Older Adult Entry.

The jurors selected the five runner-up entries for a chance to compete for the People’s Choice Awards.

The two winners, in addition to the competition winners, will be celebrated at the Award Ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to noon at Prospera Housing Community Services, 3419 Nacogdoches Rd, 78217.
