SAN ANTONIO (April 6, 2023) — Today, District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran celebrated the 36th Anniversary of Military Child Month by sponsoring a proclamation for Purple Up USA. April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, underscoring the important role military children play in the armed forces community.

Elizabeth “Liz” Lee, Founder and President of Purple Up USA along with military children from Fort Sam Houston ISD and Lackland ISD joined the ceremony. CAMO the mascot, short for Children Adapting to Military Operations, a friendly chameleon who represents the adaptability and resilience of military children, made an appearance.

“While military members serve around the world, we often forget the challenges faced by their children. Military families move on average every two to three years, impacting military children through changing schools and support networks,” said the Councilwoman. “I look forward to celebrating Military Child Month throughout the whole month of April and celebrate the entire year. Their stories are important because military children have to change and adapt their everyday lives to be successful.”

There are more than 1.6 million military children who face many challenges and unique experiences because of their parents' service. Organizations like Purple Up and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) are available to assist the community with resources and support.
