SAN ANTONIO (October 19, 2023) — In a move to highlight the rich cultural history of the LGBTQIA+ community in San Antonio, Councilmembers Dr. Sukh Kaur and Jalen McKee-Rodriguez filed a City Council Consideration Request (CCR) proposing to designate North Main Avenue a Cultural Heritage District. This announcement comes as the country recognizes LGBTQ History Month, underlining the importance of recognizing and preserving the heritage of the LGBTQIA+ community.

“The North Main Avenue corridor, the Gay Strip, is a place of comfort and safety for members of the LGBTQIA+ community,” District 2 Councilman McKee-Rodriguez said. “As the first openly gay man elected to city council, and the first openly gay Black man elected to any public office in Texas, I’m proud to collaborate with Councilwoman Kaur to honor and celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month with the official filing of this request.”

North Main Avenue, often referred to as "The Gay Strip," has been a vital focal point for San Antonio's LGBTQIA+ community for decades — a cultural hub where queer individuals can come together in spaces created by and for them. This bustling corridor is home to a diverse range of LGBTQIA+-owned and -oriented businesses, including iconic establishments like Pegasus, Sparky's Pub, and Heat. It is also the proud host of the annual "Pride Bigger than Texas" Pride Festival & Parade, which began in San Antonio in 1982 and celebrates identity, belonging, and activism.

One of the most visible symbols of acceptance and celebration on “The Gay Strip” is the Rainbow Crosswalk, a prominent feature since 2018. This colorful crosswalk stands as a symbol of San Antonio's dedication to embracing and celebrating its LGBTQIA+ community.

Creating a Cultural Heritage District involves documenting, preserving, and celebrating an area's rich cultural history. It may include the placement of historical markers, collection of oral histories, and hosting events to raise awareness of the area's heritage. Such districts foster local pride, create a strong sense of place, and boost tourism. They do not regulate or restrict the built environment like a historic district does.

Councilmembers Kaur and McKee-Rodriguez invite the San Antonio community to support this historic initiative and join in celebrating the cultural significance of N. Main Avenue. This proposed Cultural Heritage District could further enrich the tapestry of San Antonio's heritage.

“I am honored to be a part of this historic moment in San Antonio's history,” Councilwoman Kaur said, “as we celebrate the past and the future of our friends in the LGBTQA+ community to enrich the city of San Antonio, and continue to provide a place of safety, love, and equality that make our city so special.  I hope that you can come out and use this place as an oasis and support family and friends that make San Antonio a remarkable place to be regardless of sexual orientation.”
