San Antonio Artists Can Apply for $7,500 and $15,000 Grants to Create New Work

SAN ANTONIO (January 16, 2024) — The City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture has opened the Intent to Apply window for its fiscal year 2025 Artist Grants. San Antonio-based artists may apply for grant funding, available in $7,500 and $15,000 tiers, to support the creation of new work. Offered annually, Artist Grants are available to individual artists as well as those working in collaborations, collectives, and ensembles. Applicants must submit an Intent to Apply by 5 p.m. on February 16, 2024, to gain access to the full grant application (open February 16 – February 23 at 5 p.m.).

The program, established in 2022, aims to support a diverse portfolio of artists working across San Antonio. Grants are for the production of new, original, and high-quality art to be presented in the city. Artists of all disciplines, including Literary Arts, Media Arts, Multi-Disciplinary, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts are encouraged to apply.

“We’ve been able to provide grants to more than 150 artists since the program began including visual artists, performers, filmmakers, musicians, poets and multi-disciplinary artists,” said Department of Arts & Culture Director Krystal Jones. “In addition, this program enables artists to debut work all over the city in both traditional and non-traditional art spaces while being a critical investment into our artist community and cultural ecosystem.”

Artists who submit an Intent to Apply and who meet the program’s eligibility criteria will then have access to the full application that opens on February 16, 2024. The application timeline detailed below includes professional development workshops for artists:

  • January 8 – February 16: Intent to Apply window
  • January 16 – February 23: Application window
  • April – May: Application panel review
  • May – June: Notify applicants of funding recommendations
  • June – July: Funding recommendations reviewed by Arts Funding Committee and San Antonio Arts Commission
  • September: City Council vote on budget recommendations
  • October: Contracts and funding awarded to grantees

This grant program is administered with equity as a priority. Grant applications will be evaluated by a panel of experts in each artistic discipline with potential additional equity impact points to artists who self-describe as a person of racial and/or ethnic color, LGBTQIA+, a woman, a veteran, and/or living or operating their studio in a census tract that is historically disadvantaged as shown on the City of San Antonio’s Equity Atlas.

The Department of Arts & Culture’s website is home to a San Antonio Artist Registry, which provides in-depth profiles for each granted artist as well as more than 1,000 artists across the city. For more information, visit getcreativesanantonio.com and follow @getcreativesa.
