SAN ANTONIO (April 2, 2024) – Today, the San Antonio Municipal Court was joined by City leaders for a press conference to raise awareness about the perils of distracted driving. April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a crucial nationwide initiative to combat distracted driving and prevent needless loss of life on our roads.

Among the speakers, was Karin Zaltsman, a San Antonio resident whose daughter, Emily, was tragically killed by a driver who was texting at the time of the crash. The Zaltsman family’s emotional journey was shared through a public service announcement video, providing a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of distracted driving.

“While April serves as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, this message is one that must be shared and reinforced throughout the year,” said Municipal Court Presiding Judge Carla Obledo. “In addition to education, enforcement and advocacy, the Court plays a vital role in promoting responsible driving behaviors. Let’s drive change together.”

The video is available now on the Court’s website, the City’s YouTube Channel, and will be shared through the City’s social media as part of the Court’s Drive SAfely SA initiative. The Court is inviting the community to share Emily’s story and think twice before straying their attention when operating a vehicle.

“Just like we learned to put on our seatbelt when we first get into the car, now we need to change our thoughts and our attitudes about our phones when we’re driving,” Zaltsman said. “The ripple effect it causes, the rest of the family, the community, Emily’s friends… everyone is affected.”

Tips to Eliminate Distracted Driving

  • Put it away. Place your mobile device out of sight.
  • Know where you’re going. If using a navigation system, program the destination before driving.
  • Pull over. If you have to call or text while on the road, pull off the road safely and stop first.
  • Ask passengers for help. If riding with someone, seek their help to navigate, make a call or send a message.
  • Be a good passenger. Speak out if the driver of your vehicle is distracted.
  • Don’t be a distraction.  Avoid calling or texting others when you know they are driving.
