Mayor to Host Inaugural Trails Activation Event During Solar Eclipse

SAN ANTONIO (October 12, 2023) — This Saturday, October 14, 2023,community members and trail enthusiasts are invited to join the Mayor’s Office, Parks and Recreation, Metro Health, and the Mayor’s Fitness Council for the inaugural Camino Verde: Mayor’s Trails Activation event from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be multiple points of activation including Southside Lions, J Street, and MLK trailheads.
“San Antonio has one of the best greenway trails systems in the country—it’s time we celebrate it,” said Mayor Nirenberg. “Camino Verde was created not only to highlight our trails but also the community who has invested in them over the last 25 years.”
Attendees will have the opportunity to walk, bike, and get active with the mayor, meet with the Mayor’s Fitness Council members, and obtain free resources from City departments and many other local organizations. Spectators can expect to have prime Solar Eclipse viewing just before noon. Protective eclipse glasses will also be provided while supplies last. The event schedule is included below:
- 9 a.m. - Official remarks at Southside Lions Trailhead
- 9:25 a.m. - Bikers depart Southside Lions Trailhead
- 9:30 a.m. - Walkers depart Southside Lions Trailhead
- 10:15 a.m. - Walkers arrive at J Street Trailhead
- 10:30 a.m. - Departure from J Street Trailhead to MLK Trailhead
- 11:25 a.m. - Mayor and officials view solar eclipse at J Street Trailhead
“The Solar Eclipse provides us with a unique opportunity to engage local communities with our green spaces,” said Parks and Recreation Director, Homer Garcia. “With over 100 miles of multipurpose trails, Camino Verde promotes the interconnectivity of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System throughout our community growing bigger and better each year.”
Health and wellness organizations will be present at each activation point. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own water bottles as this will be a paperless event.
“Parks and outdoor spaces play a significant role in promoting healthier lifestyles by providing access to areas for physical activity, stress relief, and social interaction,” said Metro Health Director, Dr. Claude A. Jacob. “This cross-departmental initiative ensures that constituents have ready access to safe, clean, and accessible spaces to be healthier while enjoying nature.”
