SAN ANTONIO (August 28, 2023) — City Council held a Budget Work Session on August 24, 2023 to discuss the proposed budget for the City of San Antonio’s Human Services department, namely the department’s strategic plan to address homelessness and the city’s homeless response system. District 7 Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito released the following statement:

“Failing to invest in programs that tackle the challenges faced by our unhoused community would be detrimental to our city. We need to ensure we can address both the homeless situation and lack of affordable housing in San Antonio as soon as possible.

While excited about the proposed investments, we need more short-term solutions. I want to make sure we’re using our money wisely – if we don’t invest in solving the issue now, it will only get worse for our city.

I’ve called for more Homeless Outreach Coordinators to connect the unhoused to the resources they need to get off the street. District 7 is also partnering with law enforcement to make sure we don’t allow encampments in our neighborhoods.

We must find a balance between compassion and vigilance. Providing support to our unhoused neighbors while ensuring the safety and cleanliness of our neighborhoods is critical. A comprehensive approach with short-term solutions can make a meaningful impact on homelessness in San Antonio.”
