District 5 Councilmember praises the approval of the First Phase of Housing Bond Funding
SAN ANTONIO (December 15, 2022) — Today City Council approved over $43 million in the first phase of funding for San Antonio’s housing bond. Each request for housing bond funding was scored by a committee that included City staff, partners with expertise in the bond scoring parameters, and members of the Community Bond Committee. 834 of the 2,532 units produced or preserved will be deeply affordable units reserved for families below 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for rental and below 80% AMI for homeownership. Of all homes, $17.5 million will go toward Opportunity Home for a total of 509 units will be public housing/income-based housing. Councilwoman Teri Castillo stated the following, “I am grateful to San Antonio voters and this council for standing with working families and want to recognize community who continue to organize to ensure the Alazán Courts remain social housing for the community.” The first round of funding includes over $15 million for deeply affordable housing projects in District 5. $8 million will fund the expansion of the Alazán Apache Courts, which was slated for demolition just two years ago. The second round of housing bond funding will be brought before the City Council for approval in the Spring.
