District 5 Councilmember on the Passage of Resolution on Tenants’ Rights

SAN ANTONIO (May 4, 2023) — Today, City Council passed a resolution on Tenants’ Rights that consolidates and affirms existing local, state, and federal tenant protections. The resolution language was finalized after a series of meetings with stakeholders such as tenants, housing providers, legal aid organizations, and advocacy groups.

The Tenants’ Rights and Responsibilities Campaign was a positive step forward in creating awareness and  it will continue to build momentum by providing information in public spaces such as libraries, community & senior centers, municipal courts, school districts, and outreach to individuals who previously received rental assistance from the City.

The District 5 Councilwoman stated the following:

“I want to thank the courageous tenants who shined a light on bad actor landlords in San Antonio, and for the tireless work with industry stakeholders and City staff to develop resolution language that all stakeholders could agree to.

The inclusion of language within the resolution concerning a tenant’s right to organize, and supporting language justice for all, including our Spanish speaking community in a majority Latino city like San Antonio is powerful.

As we continue our work on housing equity, this resolution will empower tenants with the vital information they need to navigate issues concerning notices to vacate, right to counsel, and affirms San Antonio’s commitment toward fair housing for everyone. Today is a major victory for working-class renters in San Antonio!”

The Resolution on Tenants’ Rights is in line with the Strategic Housing Implementation Plan’s (SHIP) goal of eviction prevention through proactive education and coordinated outreach concerning tenant and landlord rights, responsibilities, and resources.
