District 4 Councilwoman commends the passage of a resolution supporting tenants’ rights

SAN ANTONIO (May 4, 2023) - The following is a statement from Councilwoman Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia regarding the passage of a resolution supporting tenants’ rights:

“This community-driven resolution in support of tenants’ rights is the result of our residents’ determination and the convening of various stakeholders who believe people should have access to and live in safe and quality housing.

It is important to recognize the collaborative efforts of the the Planning and Community Development Committee members, City staff, industry experts, community partners, and residents as we advance the recommendations outlined in the Strategic Housing Implementation Plan. For this initiative to be effective, we need to increase awareness of Fair Housing laws and tenants’ rights under existing state and federal laws and build upon other local initiatives like the Proactive Apartment Inspection Program and the Notice of Tenants Rights Ordinance.

Thank you to those who have been advocating for this resolution for several years; their efforts towards the passage of the resolution are commendable.

We look forward to the ongoing implementation of the Tenants’ Rights Awareness Campaign and will continue to advocate for more opportunities where residents can learn about their rights and have access to the resources they need. The Renters Right Power Hour sessions form part of our initial efforts and the Resource Guide will be a useful tool for residents.”
