SAN ANTONIO (July 19, 2023) – Mayor Ron Nirenberg has assigned City Council committee appointments for the 2023-2025 Council term. Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda will remain as chair of the Council’s Public Safety Committee and issued the following statement:

“I want to thank the mayor for his trust and the opportunity to continue leading the Council’s Public Safety Committee. Public Safety is consistently ranked as one of the most important issues in San Antonio.

Since becoming chair in the 2019-2021 term the committee has worked closely with the police department and the community to address the causes of crime, as well as enforcement. The committee has guided unprecedented funding towards mental health, and the San Antonio Police Department’s increased commitment to community involvement.

I also look forward to continuing as chair of the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO). AAMPO plays a crucial role in planning for the city’s expected growth and infrastructure needs. It is actively coordinating transportation efforts along the I-35 corridor, projected to reach a population of 7 million by 2030. Discussions are underway with counterparts in Austin to explore various mobility options, including rail, and collaborate with regions such as the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, and Corpus Christi.

San Antonio is one city; it is our city, and the commitment is to work to make it a world-class city.”
