D6 Councilwoman commends the City for coming one step closer to unprecedented support for foster children

SAN ANTONIO (June 15, 2023) –The San Antonio City Council offered no objections on Wednesday to a slate of local nonprofits recommended by City staff to receive a second round of mental-health-targeted American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds. After a competitive solicitation process, City staff recommended $5.16 million in awards for Nonprofit Social Services, Youth, Seniors (Older Adults), and Mental Health Services. Of these, $3 million were recommended in the category of Youth Aging Out of Foster Care and At-Risk Youth.

Taken together, the recommended $3 million added to the $2.7 million awarded through the first round of ARPA funding would represent a total of almost $6 million in dedicated funds in support of foster youth.

“I am elated. This is the outcome of several years of my consistent advocacy in support of our community's foster children,” said District 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda. “It could become the largest investment the City of San Antonio has made in support of foster children, especially those who are aging out of the system.”

The recommendation will be formally presented for approval at next week’s Council A Session.
