D6 Councilwoman commends the City for coming one step closer to unprecedented support for foster children

SAN ANTONIO (June 22, 2023) –Today, the San Antonio City Council approved two Interlocal Agreements between the City of San Antonio and VIA Metropolitan Transit. These agreements establish a cooperative partnership to deliver the North/South (N/S) Advanced Rapid Transit (ART) Corridor Project and transfer a portion of Advanced Transportation District (ATD) funds from the City to VIA for advanced transportation and enhanced mobility purposes.

Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda, Chairwoman of the Transportation and Mobility Committee, issued the following statement:

"Economic development relies on safe and efficient transportation and mobility. The North/South Advanced Rapid Transit Corridor is a pivotal mobility project that will revolutionize our City's economy and create opportunities for families to thrive.

This document lays the groundwork for turning the ART vision into a tangible reality. The expansion of safe, efficient, and dependable transportation is crucial as San Antonio continues to experience growth, accessibility improvements, and economic mobility opportunities.

Thank you to the City team for their dedicated work on this project. The VIA team has engaged with the Transportation and Mobility Committee on multiple occasions to discuss this project, and their ongoing partnership and cooperative efforts to make this a reality is appreciated.

The impact that the ART will have on our community cannot be overstated. It represents the best opportunity for rapid mass transit, and as our city continues to expand, this option is no longer a luxury but an absolute necessity.

VIA remains committed to pushing boundaries and driving progress, and I wholeheartedly support their efforts. I envision a future where the N/S and E/W ART connect all corners of our city, transforming it mile by mile."
