City Hosts Workshops to Help Homeowners Lower Property Taxes
Published on February 22, 2024
SAN ANTONIO (February 22, 2024) – The City of San Antonio is kicking off its 2024 Property Tax Help sessions to help homeowners learn about different exemptions available and the property tax protest process to potentially save on property taxes.
The sessions will be held between February and May. At the sessions, homeowners can apply for exemptions and learn about how to protest the appraised value of their home.
The sessions start with an overview of different property exemptions and protest process followed by a one-on-one workshop with representatives who can help answer questions and complete forms.
“When property taxes are a financial burden, we want to prioritize connecting families to resources that help them understand their tax bill and options,” said Veronica Garcia, the director of the City’s Neighborhood and Housing Services Department. “Paired with the San Antonio City Council’s vote to double the homestead property tax exemption to 20 percent, the sessions offer an opportunity for families to apply for savings on their tax bill.”
Check-in begins 30 minutes before the start of the event. Attendees are helped in the order of their arrival, and the number of people assisted may be limited based on the number of volunteers at each event.
Bexar County Appraisal District representatives will be in attendance to answer questions and allow attendees to file on site. The Tax Assessor’s Office will also have staff available to answer questions about payment plans.
Recommended documents to take and Bexar County resources can be found on the Neighborhood and Housing Services Department’s Property Tax Help webpage. Spanish and American Sign Language interpreters will be on site at each session to help with interpretation services. A full list of property tax help workshops is below. Recorded spring presentations are available online at SanAntonio.gov/PropertyTaxHelp.
