Catherine Hernandez Appointed Director of Transportation

SAN ANTONIO (February 21, 2024) – The City of San Antonio is pleased to announce the appointment of Catherine “Cat” Hernandez as the Director of Transportation, effective immediately. Ms. Hernandez brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in her previous role as Interim Director for the Transportation Department since May 2023.

In her capacity as Interim Director, Hernandez demonstrated exemplary leadership in planning, directing, and overseeing operations within the Transportation Department. She played a pivotal role in administering and fostering the development of the Department’s SS4A grant initiative for the Zarzamora Road corridor, as well as re-envisioning the Vision Zero Action Plan and Complete Streets policy. These crucial efforts help eliminate traffic fatalities and enhance the overall safety of our roadways.

"She is a valued member of the City team whose many years of experience and leadership have greatly benefited the departments she has been part of and the community at large. A passionate advocate for sustainable and safe transportation, Ms. Hernandez has been instrumental in leading efforts to update and create a robust Bike Network Plan, fostering the development of safer bike facilities throughout the city. Her collaborative approach includes coordination with other City departments, as well as state and local partner agencies, to ensure the seamless integration of the Bike Network Plan once it is competed. Under Hernandez’s leadership, the Transportation Department is also playing a pivotal role in the development of a Transit Oriented Development plan for VIA’s upcoming Green Line along San Pedro Avenue.

“I am humbled by the support of leadership, especially the City Manager’s Office, in allowing me to continue in the role as Director of Transportation,” Hernandez said. “I am committed to making sure everyone, regardless of their mobility challenges, can travel safely and comfortably in San Antonio.”

Ms. Hernandez brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role, having dedicated more than 20 years to the City of San Antonio in various departments within the organization. She holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from St. Mary's University.
