Carver Community Cultural Center Hosts Two-Week Camp
SAN ANTONIO (July 5, 2023) – The iconic Carver Community Cultural Center, located on San Antonio’s vibrant Eastside, is hosting its annual two-week Summer Dance Intensive, July 10-21, in collaboration with the internationally acclaimed Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT).
Local dancers ages 10-18 will receive extensive training in ballet, modern, contemporary and West African dance taught by professional choreographers and dancers from DBDT. The camp takes place weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., with a total of 30 slots available for dancers. Tuition is $300. Financial aid and scholarships are available. To register, visit TheCarver.org.
The intensive will culminate in a public showcase on Friday, July 21, at 7 p.m. in the Jo Long Theatre at the Carver. Tickets are $10 and available weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Carver box office located at 226 N. Hackberry St. or online at TicketMaster.com.
Millicent Hightower, the mother of 12-year-old Prince Jonathan Hightower, returning for his second year of the camp, stressed that the DBDT Summer Intensive at the Carver is necessary for the city’s dance community.
“It offers an opportunity to study styles and genres not necessarily available to Prince on a regular basis,” she said of her son, who has studied dance for eight years, including six years studying classical ballet. He currently studies at San Antonio City Ballet with Danae Quevado. “The instructors are youthful and happy to pour into the students and share experiences that many young pre-professional dancers soak in, forming mentoring bonds with industry dancers,” Millicent said.
