Vision Zero San Antonio Shines Light on World Day of Remembrance

SAN ANTONIO (November 14, 2025) – This Sunday, Vision Zero San Antonio (VZSA) commemorates the World Day of Remembrance by honoring those lost to traffic violence and urging our community to drive responsibly. The World Day of Remembrance, designated by the United Nations, occurs on the third Sunday of November each year. It is a time to acknowledge the profound impact of traffic crashes and advocate for safer roads.
The City will mark the World Day of Remembrance by lighting up the night at City Hall. The historic building will be bathed in yellow light to honor those who have lost their lives to traffic crashes.
“The yellow light represents a candle flame, lit to memorialize the victims and their families to road violence,” said Cat Hernandez, Director of San Antonio’s Transportation Department. “We recognize one death is one too many.”
The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio joins VZSA in memorializing the day by lighting its hospital’s “fin,” located next to the Spirit of Healing mural. The fin is 12 stories high and will be illuminated in yellow, which can be viewed from Milam Park.
“Unintentional injury, specifically motor vehicle collisions, remains a leading cause of death in children in the United States," said Garret Clark, director of trauma services for CHRISTUS Children's. "Proper car seat installation can drastically reduce injury and death of our most precious cargo. Whether it's a short trip to the grocery store or a road trip across country, always make sure your children are buckled safely so everyone remains safe, happy, and healthy.”
According to local crash data, there have been more than 133 fatal crashes in 2025, with 141 deaths. When it comes to our most vulnerable road users, 54 pedestrians and 4 bicyclists have lost their lives so far this year. SAPD and Vision Zero SA are asking drivers to be vigilant, especially at night.
“Drivers must be vigilant, and those who are walking and biking must be aware of their surroundings,” Hernandez added. “Our goal is zero deaths; zero serious injuries.”
To bring attention to the day, Vision Zero San Antonio and the Transportation Department are highlighting several safety projects, including:
- An upcoming crosswalk safety campaign along three of San Antonio’s High Injury Networks (HINs).
- Creation of an HIN Dashboard on SA.gov.
- Safety education and outreach to students, neighborhoods, and senior citizens about the importance of safety behind the wheel, on foot, or on a bike.
