SAN ANTONIO (September 22, 2025) – After being named the #1 city in the nation for its Complete Streets policy, the City of San Antonio will host a series of workshops highlighting how safer, people-first streets are shaping the future of communities.

The two-day Complete Streets Workshop will be held September 24 and 25 at the Pre-K 4 SA West Education Center located at 1235 Historic Old Highway 90 W. The community is invited to attend the public meeting on September 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Registration is free and can be found at the San Antonio Complete Streets Implementation Training public meeting form.

Developers, city planners, and engineers can participate in breakout sessions on September 25, including walk and bike audits. For more details about both days of the workshop, visit the Complete Streets website.

The recognition, awarded by Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition in their Best Complete Streets Policies 2025 report, placed San Antonio at the top among 43 new policies adopted nationwide in 2023 and 2024. In addition, San Antonio earned a gold medal in Complete Streets from CityHealth, an initiative of the de Beaumont Foundation and Kaiser Permanente, in 2024 — the first time since 2021 the city has received that honor.

The medal reflects San Antonio’s commitment to safer, more equitable streets that promote health and accessibility for all residents. Now, the City is building on that momentum.

“San Antonio is excited to co-host a workshop that recognizes its work to create safer streets that help those who are our most vulnerable road users,” said Catherine “Cat” Hernandez, Director of Transportation. “Our policy is something that public agencies and developers can refer to when considering how to create a safer street that handles various modes of transportation – from bus transit to pedestrians, to bike riders and drivers.”

The upcoming Complete Streets Workshop will gather experts, local leaders, developers, designers, engineers, and residents to showcase San Antonio’s approach, share best practices, and gather input on how the City can continue to implement the Complete Streets policy.

"Even the strongest Complete Streets policy is only as powerful as its implementation," said Heidi Simon, who leads the National Complete Streets Coalition at Smart Growth America. "San Antonio is showing real leadership by moving from policy to action, and we’re eager to support that work through an upcoming workshop that will help create safer, more accessible streets for everyone."

The workshops will feature:

  • Public sessions for residents to learn, share input, and imagine safer streets.
  • Professional tracks for developers, designers, and engineers to explore how a Complete Streets approach can shape projects.
  • Interactive exhibits showcasing the vision of Complete Streets in action.

“San Antonio’s Complete Streets policy is a powerful example of what’s possible when cities put people first,” said Katrina Forrest, JD, executive director of CityHealth. “By prioritizing safety and accessibility for all road users, San Antonio is showing how thoughtful design can save lives, strengthen neighborhoods, and set a national standard.”

San Antonio adopted its award-winning policy in 2024 and is currently developing the Complete Streets Toolkit to help guide future planning, design, and construction projects. The toolkit will prioritize safety, equity, and accessibility for all users — from children walking to school to seniors catching the bus. For more details, visit the Complete Streets website.
