San Antonio Public Library celebrates National Library Week with Fiesta medals and free activities.

SAN ANTONIO (April 16, 2026) — San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones signed a mayoral proclamation declaring April 19 – 25 as National Library Week in San Antonio. The Mayor presented the proclamation to Library Director Sukrit Goswami and library staff at the start of the City Council A Session meeting today.

“We are grateful for the continued support of Mayor Jones and City Council as we continue to strengthen the San Antonio Public Library’s role in this community,” said Library Director Sukrit Goswami. “Great cities have great libraries, and in San Antonio, our libraries are essential to how our community learns, connects, and thrives. National Library Week is a moment to recognize the impact our libraries have on the lives of our residents every single day.”

To kick off the week, the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) encourages San Antonians to visit their local library on Sunday, April 19, to find one of three hidden golden eggs. These hidden eggs can be redeemed for a free SAPL Fiesta medal at each location’s checkout desk.

All SAPL locations will have reflection murals, prompting library patrons to share their favorite library experiences, book recommendations, and more. Library users can share their anecdotes as part of these community-driven installations and see what others have shared.

Monday through Thursday, the American Library Association and libraries across the country, including SAPL, will celebrate with a series of themed days:

  • Monday, April 20: Right to Read Day is a National Day of Action in support of the right to read. The State of America's Libraries Report is released, including the Top Ten Most Challenged Books of 2025.
  • Tuesday, April 21: National Library Workers Day, a day for library staff and users to recognize the valuable contributions made by library employees.
  • Wednesday, April 22: National Library Outreach Day, a day to celebrate library outreach and the dedicated library professionals who are meeting their patrons where they are.
  • Thursday, April 23: Take Action for Libraries Day, a day to rally advocates to support libraries.

National Library Week has been celebrated as a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country since 1958. The annual celebration highlights the valuable roles that libraries, librarians and library employees play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.

This year, National Library Week coincides with a beloved San Antonio tradition – Fiesta! To view a full list of SAPL Fiesta events, visit the library’s online calendar.
