Responsible Pet Adoption This Holiday Season

San Antonio Animal Care Services urges would-be pet parents to make thoughtful decisions.
SAN ANTONIO (December 3, 2025) – It’s that time of year when people’s minds typically drift toward finding the perfect gift. For some, a new pet may seem fitting. With Friday’s National Celebrate Shelter Pets Day shining a spotlight on the thousands of wonderful dogs and cats waiting in shelters across the country, San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) encourages residents to think of adoption first during the holiday season. While SAACS does not actively discourage holiday pet adoptions, the city shelter strongly urges the community to make an informed decision when adopting a pet at any time of the year.
Bringing home a companion animal is a commitment that lasts their lifetime. That decision should be well thought out and the right fit for you, your family, and the pet. Adoption is always the best option.
Choosing to adopt supports organizations focused on animal welfare and helps combat the risks associated with purchasing a pet from a backyard breeder or illegal seller. Additionally, it is against the law in San Antonio for pets to be sold on the side of the road, in parking lots, in other unauthorized public spaces, or without the required litter and seller permits.
San Antonio's shelters, including SAACS and certified rescue partners, prioritize the health, socialization, and welfare of the animals in their care by often including vaccinations, microchips, and spay/neuter surgery in the adoption fee.
Residents can find their new best friend at the shelter’s Home for the Howlidays event, set for December 20 and 21. In addition to $25 adoptions, the event features a holiday market, food trucks, kids’ activities, and live music, spotlighted by thousands of holiday lights to create the perfect adoption opportunity while enjoying seasonal fun.
