SAN ANTONIO (October 14, 2023) – Consistent with our Critical Incident Video Release Procedure, SAPD released video from the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday, September 16, 2023. Below is a brief synopsis of the critical incident.

At around 9:30 p.m., SAPD received several 911 calls for a male suspect that was stealing items from a restaurant storage and was armed with a gun and a machete. Officers were dispatched to the location. The suspect jumped the fence from the restaurant to a nearby apartment complex. An employee confronted the suspect who took out a machete and began swinging it at the employee. The suspect then ran through the apartment complex with the backpacks still in his possession. As an officer ran through the complex in an attempt to locate the suspect, the suspect suddenly tripped and fell to the ground as an employee stood close by. The suspect stood up holding the machete in his right hand and ignored the officer’s commands to stop and drop the machete. Fearing the suspect would assault someone with the machete, the officer fired two rounds at the suspect and struck him. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. No one else was injured.

As with all officer involved shootings, the District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the incident.
