New Bike Lanes Offer Connection to the Pearl

SAN ANTONIO (July 31, 2026) – On July 30, the City of San Antonio Transportation Department celebrated the opening of the Camden Street Bike Lanes, marking the first Tier 1 project from the City's Bike Network Plan to be constructed. The 0.4 mile stretch of protected bike lanes gives cyclists a better option to reach the Pearl Brewery and its surrounding businesses.
The new bike lanes represent an important step toward building a safer, more connected transportation network that serves people of all ages and abilities. The project supports the City's Vision Zero SA initiative by creating dedicated space for bicyclists while improving predictability for everyone using the corridor.
“This project demonstrates our commitment to building a transportation system that is safer and more accessible for everyone,” said Catherine “Cat” Hernandez, Director of Transportation. “The Camden Street Bike Lanes show how the Bike Network Plan introduces a new type of protection for cyclists.”
Protected bike lanes use physical separation between bicyclists and motor vehicles to increase comfort and improve safety for all roadway users. Federal studies show that protected bike lanes can reduce motor-vehicle/bicycle crashes by 50% while improving comfort for riders of all ages and abilities.
“The Camden Street bike improvements help connect residents and visitors to neighborhoods, businesses, parks, the Pearl, Museum Reach, and other destinations while encouraging more transportation choices,” said Dr. Sukh Kaur, District 1 Councilmember.
Following a brief news conference, local cyclists joined in the inaugural Tour de Camden, a community bicycle ride celebrating the opening of the new protected bike lanes.
The City's Bike Network Plan establishes a long-term vision for expanding San Antonio's bicycle network through strategic investments that improve connectivity and safety across the community.
The City thanks residents, neighborhood stakeholders, and community partners whose input helped shape the Bike Network Plan and make projects like Camden Street possible.
