SAN ANTONIO (August 4, 2025) – The City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) confirmed that a mosquito pool tested positive for the West Nile Virus (WNV). This is the first positive mosquito pool for the 2025 season. The mosquito trap was collected in the north central area of San Antonio near the intersection of West Avenue and Blanco Road.

Metro Health is scheduled to treat the area on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 3 a.m. Residents should remain inside during the time sprayers are in the area. Treatment of the area may be rescheduled due to inclement weather conditions.

Mosquitoes can spread serious diseases, so it's important to take simple steps to reduce their presence around homes.

Eliminate Standing Water

  • Empty, scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out any items that hold water (like buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, or trash containers).
  • Do this weekly to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

Protect People

  • Use insect repellent with DEET or Picaridin on exposed skin.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks, especially during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

Keep Mosquitoes Out of the Home

  • Use air conditioning if available.
  • Install or repair screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
