Mayor Urges Senators Cornyn and Cruz to Oppose Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act
SAN ANTONIO (February 26, 2026) – Today, Mayor Jones sent a letter to Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, requesting that they oppose the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act” (SAVE Act) if brought before the United States Senate for a vote.
“For many reasons, this bill is unnecessary and would create additional challenges to Americans seeking to exercise their freedom to participate in the democratic process,” wrote Mayor Jones.
Under the SAVE Act, American citizens would be required to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate or a passport, when registering to vote in federal elections.
According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 84% of women change their last name when they get married. This would mean that the vast majority of American married women could not use their birth certificate alone to prove their U.S. citizenship, as it does not reflect their married legal name. In addition, about half of Americans do not own a passport.
This follows the Mayor’s announcement on Wednesday, February 25, that she would be working to establish the Mayor’s Commission on Voting in order to increase voter participation across the City of San Antonio.
