Mayor Requests US Department of Homeland Security Secretary to Reconsider Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility
SAN ANTONIO (April 8, 2026) – Today, Mayor Jones sent a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin, requesting that he reconsider the department’s reported intention to utilize a warehouse facility located in San Antonio as a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing facility.
“As I shared with your predecessor, my community is not interested in hosting an ICE processing facility and believes it will further depress economic activity in a part of town that already struggles to attract economic development,” said the Mayor.
In February 2026, the Mayor sent a letter with U.S. Representatives Henry Cuellar, Joaquin Castro, and Greg Casar, as well as Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai and Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert, Jr., to former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, expressing strong opposition to the proposed plan by ICE to open a processing facility on the Eastside of San Antonio for detained immigrants and requesting an in-person meeting to discuss the impact of this plan.
The Mayor continued in the letter to Secretary Mullin, “I did not receive a response from your predecessor; however, I hope to have a more productive and transparent engagement with your office as we similarly aim to balance public safety and public trust.”
