SAN ANTONIO (April 27, 2026) – On Thursday, April 23, Mayor Jones joined American GI Forum for a press conference focused on ending housing discrimination against veterans who use housing vouchers.

“I am proud to stand side by side with my brothers and sisters in arms to call for ending housing discrimination against veterans simply because they use a housing voucher,” said the Mayor. “In Military City USA, we have a responsibility to help veterans. No excuses. No delays. Fort Worth passed this ordinance two years ago. Let’s pass this ordinance as soon as possible.”

“This ordinance is straightforward,” said Pete Bernal, Commander of American GI Forum of Bexar County. “It doesn’t force landlords to lower the rent. It doesn’t remove background checks. It simply says you cannot deny a veteran because of how they pay.”

"We are Military City, USA!” said Lawrence Guzman Romo, LULAC National Vice President of Veterans. “Let’s show it! We salute the Mayor in championing this ordinance and call on the full San Antonio City Council to vote on it without delay. No veteran should be discriminated against for using a housing voucher.”

“Passing this ordinance should be straightforward,” said Harry Robinson, Texas State Commander of National Association for Black Veterans. “It has already been approved in another city in our state, and it does not impact our city’s budget. There is no reason it should face this much delay or resistance. So, I have to ask: if this ordinance has no budget impact and has clear public support, when will it come before City Council for a vote?”

“For many veterans, housing instability and not being able to live close to a VA health facility can take a serious toll on mental health,” said Robert A. Trevino, Board Member of Wheelchairs for Warriors, Line of Duty. “When you don’t know where you’re going to sleep, when doors keep closing, it can lead to anxiety, depression, and in some cases contribute to homelessness or even suicide. No one who has served this country should feel turned away while trying to rebuild their life.”

The Mayor’s proposal to prohibit discrimination against veterans who use a housing voucher is set to be discussed in the Planning and Community Development Committee on Tuesday, April 28 at 10 a.m.
